Virtual learning is the reality for parents around the metro – including Birmingham City Schools and Jefferson County Schools, which are e-learning for at least the first nine weeks – and local organizations are offering options for parents who are struggling to juggle full-time work and homeschooling.
Club J All Day at the Levite Jewish Community Center provides children with a managed, safe environment where students can learn virtually and also participate in extracurricular activities. This is offered for students in grades K-6.
Magic City ePLEX is offering a new eLearning program where students will interact in a school-like setting while children are not in school. In addition to learning, students will have a small group of fellow students to play and socialize with.
The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) is offering a drop-in youth study program, where children of UAB faculty, staff and students in grades K-8 can have a safe, supervised site to work on schoolwork or take part in activities. The program will take place at The Hilton at UAB and does cost money, but financial assistance may be available based on income.
Wyndy has added a nanny program to its services offered to provide more regular, consistent childcare for families who need it.
The YMCA of Greater Birmingham School Support Academy supports students’ virtual learning and also offers engaging, camp-style activities to keep students active throughout the day.
