Rise of the Rest
This past May, Birmingham was one of five cities selected for the Rise of the Rest Road Tour. Steve Case, co-founder of AOL, formed the Rise of the Rest initiative to support the growth of innovative, tech-focused business located outside the major tech hubs of Silicon Valley, New York City and Boston. The ROTR Seed Fund is backed by a group of iconic entrepreneurs, executives and investors. Each year, the tour stops in five cities with emerging startup ecosystems, spending an entire day being shown the highlights of each city's startup community, ending with a pitch competition with a $100,000 prize.
