UAB selected to join prestigious Association of American Universities

The University of Alabama at Birmingham has accepted an invitation to join the Association of American Universities, securing UAB’s place among the most prominent and impactful institutions of higher education and research in the United States and Canada.

Since the AAU’s founding in 1900, its members have represented the nation’s leading research universities for more than 125 years. Membership is based on an extensive set of quantitative indicators that assess the breadth and quality of a university’s research and education.

“Being asked to join the AAU is an honor that recognizes the great work and results driven by UAB’s talented faculty and staff, the support of our public and private partners, and the unwavering dedication of the University of Alabama System Board of Trustees,” said UAB President Ray L. Watts, M.D. “I want to thank the AAU Board and Membership Committee for recognizing UAB among the distinguished institutions that compose this prestigious association. We look forward to contributing to the AAU’s important mission.”

This milestone is also a tremendous win for the Greater Birmingham Region. UAB’s continued growth strengthens our region’s competitive position, attracts top talent, advances groundbreaking research and creates opportunities for business investment and collaboration. As one of Alabama’s largest economic engines and employers, UAB plays an essential role in shaping the future of our workforce and economy. At the Birmingham Business Alliance, we congratulate UAB on this well-deserved achievement and look forward to the continued impact this recognition will bring to Birmingham and the entire state.
