UAB Opens Biomedical Research and Innovation Center, Strengthening Birmingham’s Role in Health and Science
On Thursday, Oct. 23, the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) celebrated the grand opening of its new Biomedical Research and Innovation Center, a state-of-the-art, 175,000-square-foot facility designed to transform groundbreaking research into real-world impact. Located on Seventh Avenue South between 19th and 20th Streets, the center will serve as a hub for translating information into commercial applications, developing new drugs, and launching medical startups.Â
The project was made possible through a historic $50 million investment from the State of Alabama’s Public School and College Authority, the largest state investment ever made in a university facility. The new center will advance UAB’s mission in research, clinical care, and education, with initiatives focused on tackling some of today’s most pressing health challenges, including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cancer, addiction, data science, bioinformatics, artificial intelligence, genomic engineering and lab science.Â
